PBD, observed biennially on January 9th, commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa in 1915, a pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence. This year’s event, held in partnership with the Odisha state government, carries the theme “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), highlighting the diaspora’s role in India’s journey towards progress.
The event witnessed a vibrant gathering of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) from over 50 countries, united by their shared heritage and a desire to contribute to India’s growth story. The convention serves as a platform for these individuals to connect with their roots, network with fellow members of the diaspora, and engage with the Indian government on issues of mutual interest.
PM Modi’s Vision: India as a Global Skill Hub
In his inaugural address, PM Modi lauded the Indian diaspora for their remarkable achievements across various fields, acknowledging their role as cultural ambassadors and their contribution to India’s soft power. He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to their engagement with India, inviting them to be active participants in the nation’s development.
A key highlight of his speech was India’s potential to become a global hub for skilled manpower. “India, with its demographic dividend and a renewed focus on skill development, is uniquely positioned to meet the world’s demand for talented professionals,” PM Modi asserted. Prior to the main event, the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held on January 8th, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Dr. Dev Pragad, CEO of Newsweek, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour, sharing his insights on the role of diaspora youth in a globalized world. The event featured discussions on various topics relevant to young NRIs and PIOs, including leadership, innovation, and cultural identity.

The PBD Convention includes five thematic plenary sessions, each focusing on specific areas of interest:

- “Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers: Stories of Migrant Skills”: This session highlights the contributions of skilled migrants to their host countries and India, focusing on their experiences and achievements.
- “Green Connections: Diaspora’s Contributions to Sustainable Development”: This session focuses on the diaspora’s role in promoting sustainable practices and addressing climate change, sharing best practices and innovative solutions.
- “Diaspora Divas: Celebrating Women’s Leadership and Influence – Nari Shakti”: This session celebrates the achievements of women in the diaspora, recognizing their leadership and influence across various fields.
- “Partnering for Progress: Diaspora’s Role in India’s Amrit Kaal”: This session explores how the diaspora can contribute to India’s progress during the ‘Amrit Kaal’, the 25-year period leading up to the centenary of India’s independence.
