The crime branch of Delhi Police on Saturday arrested actor-activist Deep Sidhu, an accused in the Red Fort violence on Republic Day. A Delhi court granted bail to Deep Sidhu on 17 April 2021. Sidhu’s lawyer told the court that just presence did not make him part of the illegal assembly and that he was an honest citizen who was part of a protest.
Special Judge Neelofar Abida Parveen granted bail to Sidhu in personal confinement with two local sureties of Rs 30,000. Sidhu was also ordered by the court to cooperate with the police investigation as required. The government lawyer representing the Delhi Police claimed that Sidhu participated in the protests to create violence and defy the national flag and was the main instigator of the illegal assembly.
Sidhu was arrested on 9 February Violence on Republic Day during the tractor parade of farmers against the three new agricultural laws of the Red Fort Centre. On 26 January, thousands of protesters, who arrived in thousands, clashed with the Ito Ghazipur border police, the agency claimed the FIR was registered in connection with the Red Fort violence, with several driving tractors reaching the Red Fort and entering the memorial, where a religious flag was also hoisted.
In the FIR, police said two magazines with 20 live cartridges were snatched from two constables by protesters who also damaged vehicles and looted anti-riot gear.
