KIIT Odisha Grapples with Tragedy as Investigation into Student Death Continues

Bhubaneswar, Odisha – The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar is facing a challenging period as it grapples with the aftermath of a student’s tragic death and the subsequent investigation. The incident has prompted widespread concern and raised questions about student safety and support systems within the university.  

The Incident

On February 16, a third-year B.Tech student was found dead in her hostel room. The circumstances surrounding her death led to protests by Nepali students who alleged that she had been harassed by a fellow student and that the college had failed to take appropriate action despite multiple complaints.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the protests, the police launched an investigation into the allegations of harassment and abetment to suicide. A student, identified as Advik Srivastava, was arrested on February 17 and subsequently sent to judicial custody. The police have stated that they are thoroughly examining all aspects of the case, including the claims of harassment and the university’s response to the complaints.  

Student Concerns and Protests

The death of the student and the allegations of harassment have sparked widespread concern among the student community, particularly among the Nepali students at KIIT. Many students have expressed their concerns about the safety and security on campus and have demanded that the university take concrete steps to address these issues.

Following the incident, a large number of Nepali students left the campus, citing safety concerns and a lack of trust in the university administration. The university administration has been working to address these concerns and to encourage the students to return to campus.  

University Response and Appeals

KIIT has taken several steps to address the situation and to reassure the student community. The university has:

  • Expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased student.
  • Announced a scholarship in memory of the student.
  • Met with a delegation from Nepal to discuss the concerns of Nepali students.
  • Issued a statement affirming its commitment to the safety and security of all students.
  • Established a 24/7 helpdesk for students and issued helpline numbers.  
  • Appealed to the Nepali students to return to campus and resume their studies.

The university administration has also assured that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted into the incident and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

Government Intervention

The Odisha state government has also taken cognizance of the situation and has assured that justice will be served in the case. The government has:  

  • Directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
  • Sent a delegation to the KIIT campus to assess the situation and interact with the students.
  • Established a high-level committee to inquire into the circumstances of the student’s death and the allegations of harassment.
  • Assured the Nepali government and the students that their concerns will be addressed.

The Road Ahead

The tragic incident at KIIT has highlighted the need for universities to create a safe and supportive environment for all students. It is crucial for universities to have robust systems in place to prevent and address incidents of harassment and discrimination. Furthermore, universities must ensure that students have access to adequate mental health support and counseling services.
