Two postgraduate students, Rameshwar Chakraborty and Astyartha Das, have created a one-of-a-kind tactile Braille map of the entire campus. This innovative project aims to provide a sense of orientation and independence for visually impaired students, enabling them to navigate the campus with ease.
The map, a masterpiece of meticulous craftsmanship, was created over two months as part of a course project on “Disability in Indian Literature.” The students used an existing university map as a reference and employed various techniques to create a tactile experience. The map is made on a wooden board measuring 5 feet by 3.5 feet and utilizes screws and cardboard to represent different landmarks and pathways.
The Braille map is not only a physical representation of the campus but also a symbol of inclusivity and accessibility. It allows visually impaired students to independently explore the campus, attend classes, and participate in extracurricular activities without relying on assistance. The map also serves as a valuable tool for orientation, helping new students familiarize themselves with the campus layout and locate important buildings and facilities.
