Tharoor’s Selfie with Six Women in Parliament Triggers Storm in Social Media

After posting a selfie on Twitter senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor sparked a row on Monday on the first day of the winter session. He also gave a caption with the post. That is, “Who says the Lok Sabha isn’t an attractive place to work?”

 Preneet Kaur Congress’s Mp wife of former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, Trinamool’s Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan Ruhi, NCP’ Supriya Sule, DMK’s Thamizhachi Thangapandian, and Congress’s Jyothimani Sennimalai were with Tharoor in this picture.

 It is clear from the post that the selfie was captured by Mimi Chakraborty and Tharoor is in the middle of women as well as the photo. Everyone was in the happy face. The women MPs have also shared his post on their social media account.

 Many people criticized the MP and accused him of “objectification” and “sexism”. Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women also hits out at Tharoor and throws some sentences, “you are demeaning their contribution in parliament and politics by making them an object of attraction. Stop objectifying women in parliament.”

After getting accused the Congress leader has clarified and said, ” the whole selfie thing was done (at the women MPs’ initiative) in great good humor & it was they who asked me to tweet it in the same spirit. He also said, “I am sorry some people are offended but I was happy to be roped into this show of workplace camaraderie. That’s all this is.”

 Netizens didn’t spare him and gave their reaction on the comment section of Tharoor’s post. A senior journalist commented on Tharoor’s post, “Women in the Lok Sabha are not decorative items meant to make your workspace” attractive.” They are parliamentarians and you are being disrespectful and sexist.”

 Address to Tharoor one commented on Twitter, “attractive place to work or show of camaraderie.” Another person has written, “Like literally, is there anything wrong in that? I seriously can’t find anything.”

 On the other side, TMC MP Mauhua Moitra has defended Sashi Tharoor and tweeted that the people are trolling Tharoor very badly on a non-issue. In her statement, people are doing this to distract the attraction from the government’s decision not to allow organizing a meeting on-farm act repeal. As the government passed the Farm Laws Repeal bill without any discussion.
