Address to the nation Prime Minister said, “While apologizing to the nation, I want to say with a sincere and pure heart that maybe something was lacking… that we couldn’t explain the truth to some of our farmer brothers… we have decided to repeal the three farm laws.”

The three farm laws-

Law 1: Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act.

According to this law, the Indian government said that through market forces the crop prices would be determined. Farmers will get more revenues for growing the in-demand crops. The government claimed that, under this law, farmers can now directly deal with end-buyers.

But the farmers were worried that the new law may be evaporated their guaranteed minimum price for the produce. They also feared the ‘corporatization of agriculture may force on the farmers unreasonably low prices.

Law 2: Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act.

The government said that under this law farmers can freely sell their farm produce in any place of the country. And they don’t have to pay state tax for this trade.

Small and marginal farmers said that it is difficult to get better prices at the market. Because storage and travel are much cost-efficient. They are also angry about section 8 of this law which said that farmers can appeal to the sub-divisional magistrate(SDM) for dispute resolution. They told that they are not much influential to go to the SDM office.

Law 3: Essential Commodities (Amendment Act).

Under this law government’s power was to scrap the limited stocks of essential food, except for an extraordinary situation. Onions, edible oil, and other goods were removed from this list. It may further allow the government to regulate the trade of such goods or they can re-include those commodities on the list.

In this law, there were no odds between the government and farmers.
